The standard closed string staircase is a simple design that can still show lots of detail. Closed string staircases are normally constructed from solid timber enclosing all treads and risers. They can be constructed using a lower specification where they will be carpeted, or a higher specification using a hardwood to create a natural finish, or clear finish.
The closed string staircase can be finished with a bullnose and curtail treads at the bottom of the flight of stairs to create a more open feel to the first fee steps.
Closed string staircases feature notches into which the treads and risers can be inserted. With this type of stringer, the edge of the tread is not visible and the vertical parts of the handrail (made up of balusters and newels) are typically attached to the top of the stringer.
The stair strings are classified under 3 main categories: closed stringers, cut stringers and mono stringers. The closed stringers and cut stringers are affixed to the sides of the staircase.
A lot is possible from a staircase renovation… but not the ability to change a closed string staircase to a cut string staircase. If you wish to convert a closed staircase to an open staircase, a full staircase replacement will be required.
The stair stringer is a structural member installed on either side or in the centre of a flight of stairs into which the treads and risers are attached. The primary function of the stringer is to provide a framework and load-bearing support for the treads and risers.
